This month saw the eleventh and final auction at the Heinrich Köhler auction house in Wiesbaden, Germany, in which the huge stamp collection of German billionaire Erivan Haub, owner of the Tengelmann Gruppe business group, was auctioned. Since 2019, there has been plenty to look at in the many auctions held in Europe and the US over the past 5 years. The latest auction was no exception.
The most expensive item that was auctioned was a letter with a stripe of six of the first stamp of Bavaria. Lot number 8 had a starting price of €40,000 at auction and ended up being auctioned for a whopping €260,000 plus auction fees.
Lot 39 with a starting price of € 2,000 also achieved a huge increase. It sold for ten times as much at €20,000 plus auction fees.
Also beautiful was a block of four colour misprint of a stamp of Saxony from 1851, which sold for € 25,000. This is the only known block of four and the second largest known multiple of these stamps. The largest is a block of ten which sold at the same auction house in 2020 for €95,000. This specimen was also part of the collection of Erivan Haub!
On the one hand it is sad that this amazing collection has fallen apart, on the other hand it is positive news as many other collections around the world have been expanded with these amazing items. The auction also showed the world that philately is still very much alive, most lots always sell and many reach record prices, which is great news for investors too!
